Historic Homes Receive Texas State Historical Medallions

On January 18th, the Gonzales Garden Club donated twelve small live oak trees to be planted in Independence Park as replacements for some of the trees destroyed by Hurricane Carla. On March 1st, the Texas State Historical Survey Committee ended its tour of historic sites in Texas in Gonzales, where the first of an anticipated 1,000 Historical Medallions was unveiled at the 1840’s Eggleston House. This house is one of the best examples of “dog-run” architecture in Texas. Two other houses in Gonzales also received Historical Medallions on March 8: The Old College, owned by the Henry Reese family, and the former Chennault Home, now owned by the J.R. Tinsleys. On March 29, paving was completed at Gonzales Airport. Gonzales Feed and Supply became a new Purina dealer in Gonzales on April 19, located at 223 Water Street, with Knapp Burnett as owner/manager. The Chamber of Commerce moved into its new offices at 427 St. George Street in the Randle-Rather Building on September 4th, after announcing on August 30. Citizens National Bank changed its name to First National Bank on October 4. It had been called Citizens National Bank since 1955 and before that, it was known as the Gonzales State Bank. Founded by Miller and Sayers in 1868, it is the oldest continuously operating bank in the city.
