Integration of Schools
On the 22nd of April, the Remschel Lumber Company’s awning fell off, taking part of the top of the building with it. The building, owned by Mrs. J.F. Remschel, is on Saint Francis Street, between Saint Louis and Saint Paul Streets, and was being used by Schwarz Motor Company.
On the 29th of April, it was announced that a system of “free choice” would be implemented in Gonzales Schools, beginning in September, to bring integration. The decision came after the school board president, Phil Friberg, and the superintendent, Fred Havel, attended a meeting in San Antonio where they learned that Gonzales’ integration plan had been rejected. The announcement was made after a personnel meeting turned into a full school board meeting. The board had to implement full integration to sign the Form 441 that would qualify the school for federal aid, including all school-sponsored organizations. However, students in grades eight and below would have a choice, while all high school students would attend Gonzales High School and Edwards High School would be closed.
On the 29th of July, a ribbon cutting was held to mark the opening of the Goodyear Store at 813 Saint Joseph Street. On the 5th of August, construction began on the new hangar for the airport. On the 26th of August, Wuest’s advertised T-bone steaks for 87 cents a pound, while on the 2nd of September, IGA advertised them for 83 cents a pound.
