Teams roll into downtown Gonzales before sunrise for a 6 a.m. setup\, check in between 8 and 9:30 a.m.\, and then spend the rest of the day turning in eleven different categories for judging\, from Sausage Appetizer at 11 a.m. all the way through T-Bone Steak\, Pork Ribs\, and the Cast Iron/Dutch Oven Kids Dessert by 2:30 p.m. \nIt’s a serious competition dressed up as a neighborhood party. Categories cover the full range of backyard cooking: T-Bone\, Half Chicken\, Full Rack Pork Ribs\, Chili\, Beans\, Sausage Appetizer\, Giblet Rice\, Fire Roasted Salsa\, BBQ Sauce\, and a 21-and-up Fall Flavor Margarita contest built around autumn flavors like apple cider\, cranberry\, and cinnamon. There’s also a dedicated Cast Iron/Dutch Oven Kids Dessert category\, where the young cooks (ages 5–13) have to do at least 90% of the work themselves\, with adults only allowed to help with hot coals. \nEvery category is blind judged and comes with cash prizes and bragging rights on the line\, T-Bone alone pays out $300 for first place\, and every other category offers a $100–$250 payout across first through third. Entry fees range from $25 to $65 per category\, and teams can enter as many as they’d like. \nBusinesses looking to get involved can step in as a $500 sponsor (entry into every category plus logo and business name on all promotional materials) or a $250 sponsor (entry into 5 of 11 categories of their choice\, plus name recognition on signage). Sponsorship and entry forms are due by September 18\, 2026\, and only paid sponsors are permitted to promote their business from a booth on-site. \nWhether you’re competing or just walking the block sampling the smell of smoked meat and fire-roasted salsa in the fall air\, the Cook-Off is one of the signature Saturday-into-Sunday traditions of the Come and Take It Celebration weekend. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space alter_height=”none” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][vc_btn title=”Download Application Packet” style=”flat” shape=”square” color=”black” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fcome6875.live-website.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2026%2F09%2Fcookoff-2026.pdf|title:Cook%20Off%20Application”][vc_empty_space alter_height=”none” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][vc_raw_html css=””]JTVCbW9kdWxhJTIwaWQlM0QlMjI2MTMwJTIyJTVEJTBB[/vc_raw_html][vc_empty_space alter_height=”none” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

During Come and Take It weekend\, this beautiful two-story Victorian home opens its doors for public tours\, showcasing handcrafted furniture\, preserved architectural features\, and stories spanning over a century of Texas life. \nThe home\, originally built in 1885\, offers a unique glimpse into post-Civil War Texas. Many of the pieces inside were created by J.B. Wells Jr. himself — including mantles\, lighting\, and even replicas of the Alamo and historic ships. Each room tells a story of family\, craftsmanship\, and regional pride. \n🏛️ Highlights from the Tour \nDownstairs: \n\n\nA 10-foot pier glass framed in river-bottom walnut \n\n\nOriginal wallpaper and curtains from the 1800s \n\n\nA Tiffany lamp that’s been in the family since 1910 \n\n\nMantles made from repurposed organs and walnut beds with trundle frames \n\n\nUpstairs: \n\n\nMassive walnut furniture from Texas cabinet makers \n\n\nAntique washstands and mirrors in the “dolphin’s tail” style \n\n\nArtifacts and photos from family members who served in three wars \n\n\n📍 Location + Parking \nThe JB Wells House is located just 5 driving minutes east of Independence Square at 829 Mitchell Street. There is limited on-site parking\, but overflow parking is available along Mitchell and St. Andrew Streets. Please be mindful of signage and driveways. \nAccessible parking is located directly in front of the house on the gravel pull-in. \n🛎️ Tips for Visitors \n\n\nNo public restroom access inside the home. \n\n\nPhotography: Photos are allowed without flash — this helps preserve antique materials. \n\n\nKids Welcome: Children must be supervised at all times\, as many items are original and fragile. \n\n\nWeather Note: The home is not fully climate-controlled. Light clothing is advised for warm afternoons. \n\n\nTickets: Purchase admission at the front door\, cash preferred. \n\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space alter_height=”none” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][vc_empty_space alter_height=”none” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

There is no conductor. There has never really been a setlist\, not in over a hundred years of existence. And somehow\, that absence of structure is exactly what has kept the Shiner Hobo Band alive for a century\, longer than most professional acts with actual management behind them. \nThe story starts after World War I\, when veterans came home to find the family bands and dance hall groups that once soundtracked their small towns had scattered during the war years. Rather than mourn what was lost\, a group of returning soldiers stitched something new together out of patched clothes\, borrowed instruments\, and the simple determination to make people laugh and dance again. That combination of chaos and charm became the blueprint. Mismatched overalls\, rowdy energy\, and a standing arrangement with the Spoetzl Brewery to supply a keg per show turned the Hobos into something closer to a traveling party than a traditional band. \nBy 1936\, under the direction of Emmett Busch\, who led the group while waving a toilet plunger in place of a baton\, the Hobos had become a genuine regional sensation. Crowds across Shiner\, Gonzales\, and the surrounding towns turned out for the brass and button accordion sound\, a combination that felt both foreign and completely at home in Central Texas. The band kept showing up through the 1950s for parades\, church picnics\, and civic events\, a fixture of small town life until longtime leader Curt Messer’s declining health slowly pulled the group out of the spotlight. \nThe silence did not last. In 1986\, the Hobos returned for the Texas Sesquicentennial\, rallying local musicians under Joe Panus\, who inherited both the leadership role and the plunger baton tradition along with it. A speaker rigged school bus and a fresh coat of paint gave the revival its own identity\, but the spirit underneath was unchanged\, humor first\, heritage always\, rules optional. \nToday the band carries up to thirty active members pulled from towns across Central and South Texas\, still operating as a nonprofit\, still sponsored by the brewery that backed them from the start. Every performance is played from memory\, no sheet music in sight\, which means no two Hobo sets ever sound quite the same. That unpredictability is the whole appeal. Somewhere between a polka breaking into a joke and a surprise solo nobody saw coming\, the band proves its own philosophy correct: the best music happens when you throw out the rules and play from the heart. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
